  3. Welcome to Frommer's Interactive Travel Guide.  Please read the information below for simple instructions 
  4. on installing and running Frommer's Interactive Travel Guide on your PC computer running Microsoft(r) 
  5. Windows(tm)3.1 or Windows(tm)95.

  30. Installation
  31. Install the Frommer's Interactive Travel Guide using the instructions 
  32. included with the CD-ROM.

  35. QuickTime for Windows Installation
  36. The Frommer's Interactive Travel Guide requires installation of QuickTime for Windows for proper 
  37. playback of music, videos and photos.   We strongly recommend that you install QuickTime for Windows 
  38. 2.0.3, which is provided on the Frommer's Interactive Travel Guide CD-ROM drive.  QuickTime for 
  39. Windows 2.0.3 can be installed during the Frommer's Interactive Travel Guide installation process or at 
  40. anytime after the application is installed.

  42. The QuickTime for Windows 2.0.3 installer will search for existing versions of QuickTime for Windows and 
  43. will provide you with the opportunity to quit the installer, if QuickTime for Windows 
  44. 2.0.3 is already loaded.  
  45.  
  46. If an old version of QuickTime for Windows is detected and replaced, you must restart Windows before 
  47. loading Frommer's Interactive Travel Guide.  If you do not restart Windows, Frommer's Interactive Travel 
  48. Guide will display a General Protection Fault.

  51. Help
  52. Frommer's Interactive Travel Guide includes "context sensitive" help for every screen. When using the 
  53. Frommer's Interactive Travel Guide, just click the "?" button and instructions will appear.
  54.  
  55. Known Conflicts
  56. The Novell CD-ROM driver, NWCDEX.EXE is not compatible with QuickTime for Windows.  The driver 
  57. will produce an "Integer divide by Zero" error.  The Microsoft MSCDEX.EXE CD-ROM driver provided 
  58. with Windows 3.11 can be used in place of the Novell driver.

  64.     *    Product Name
  65.     *    Model, total memory and configuration of your computer
  66.     *    Any additional system information, such as type and
  67.         make of your monitor, video card, printer, modem and
  68.         external CD-ROM drive.
  69.     *    Operating System version number (i.e Windows 3.1)
  70.     *    Description of your problem

  72. We have included a file on the Frommer's Interactive Travel Guide CD-ROM which provides information on 
  73. your computer.  The folder cdmatch contains a small program called cdmatch. It is strongly recommended 
  74. that you have a print out or screen display of this information available during any calls to Tech Support 
  75. screen 
  76.

  80. Installation Problems
  81. "Installation fails because Windows cannot create a program group." In Windows 3.1, you can only have 40 
  82. Program Groups at one time. Try removing unnecessary Program Groups and reinstall Frommer's 
  83. Interactive Travel Guide.

  85. "Divide by Zero error while installing QuickTime."
  86. This message means the system has run out of DOS memory. Try booting from a floppy disk with minimal 
  87. autoexec.bat and config.sys, then install QuickTime.  Once QuickTime is installed, restart your
  88. computer in the normal fashion.

  90. "The QuickTime installer cannot delete VIEWENU.DLL (an icon file for the Viewer Windows item) 
  91. because it is "in use." Quit the QuickTime installer, leaving a partial, incomplete install.  Restart Windows 
  92. and reinstall QuickTime.

  95. Problems with QuickTime Movie playback within Frommer's Interactive Travel Guide. "Movies are not 
  96. playing smoothly, frames are dropping out, etc."  Your software CD-ROM caching may be interfering with 
  97. QuickTime's' internal caching.  Turn off external caching  (for example, SmartDrive.) Refer to your DOS 
  98. manual for help with SmartDrive.
  99.  
  100. "Your audio or video drivers may be out of date." Turn the volume all the way down during playback of 
  101. Frommer's Interactive Travel Guide.  If the video plays smoothly without the sound, then the problem 
  102. probably resides with your sound or video card.  Refer to the instruction manuals for these cards for help 
  103. diagnosing and resolving driver problems.  Obtain the latest drivers for your sound and video cards from the 
  104. manufacturers.
  105.  
  106. "Virtual memory may be interfering with QuickTime's' internal caching." Turn off virtual memory.
  107.  
  108. "You may be using the Microsoft Speaker driver which does not allow sound and video to play at the same 
  109. time." Contact your computer hardware manufacturer or Microsoft for information on replacement drivers.
  110.  
  111. "Your computer may not be running in Turbo mode."  Make sure the turbo button on the front of your 
  112. computer is on.
  113.  
  114. "There may be a DMA conflict between hardware components in your computer"  Reconfigure the drivers 
  115. for your hardware so there are no overlapping DMA assignments. Refer to the instructions/manuals for your 
  116. hardware components for help with reconfiguration.

  118. Note:  The Frommer's Interactive Travel Guide is designed for optimal viewing at 640 x 480.
